General Discussion / Re: Thoughts on the Micro-Swiss cooling block?
« on: February 06, 2018, 06:57:24 PM »
I don't see any big reason why the Micro-Swiss heatsink would be better than the stock one, apart from the way it clamps around the hot end feed tube, perhaps providing better thermal contact than the Zortrax grub screw. I've played around with heat sink compound at that point and not noticed much if any difference.

Hi brett. Did you use the PTFE ZT-HE, or the all metal one. the Color fab website suggests using an all metal extruder due to the friction of the filament. Although the Z-Temp site says the all metal hot end won't work with PLA? Thanks

Looking closely at Brett's video, I don't see the groove that we machine into the tube in order to distinguish the all-metal from PTFE version, So I think he used the PTFE.

Materials Compatibility / Re: PTFE or all metal HE with Colorfab Copperfill

I never had any luck with any colorFabb PLA/PHA material with the Zortrax v2 hot end, so I doubt it will work with the all-metal ZT-HE, although I haven't tried it. It just has too much expansion in my experience. I'd go with the PTFE, and use as low a temperature as possible.

Hi Michael,

I have not experimented much with the settings now offered in the most recent Z-Suite. Frankly, I just always use the Z-ABS profile for everything and adjust temperature with Z-Temp, in order to minimize variables. Z-ABS defaults to 276º, although a print can start anywhere from there up to 290º, depending on overshoot. It's always back pretty close to that before the raft is done, though. If you have a Z-Temp and Z-LCD, of course, you can see the actual temperature at any time.

There is a chart of nominal temperatures at

http://www.z-temp.co/support/z-suite-nominal-profile.html

but it doesn't have the more recent additions to the Z-materials line.

When printing flexible material like TPU, I use RaftAway to slow the extrusion speed down by 50% and of course to remove the raft.

I don't think ZT-HE runs "hotter" than the stock hot end; the temperature is controlled by the feedback loop between the thermocouple and the heater, via the printer's firmware. The firmware doesn't know what kind of hot end is installed, and the aluminum blocks are quite similar between the two hot ends, so I think there's no reason for it to run "hotter", although its more free-flowing nature may make it seem that way.

Thanks for that, I presume you mean the standard PTFE version of the ZT-HE

Yes. I use the all-metal only for Z-ABS.

Interesting. I think these other hot ends probably have better heat-break cooling than the Zortrax or ZT-HE. ZT-HE has a lot better isolation than the Zortrax hot ends, but it's not perfect. My experience is that colorFabb PLA/PHA tends to swell more under heat than most filaments, and this is what causes jams, but I've had good success with their xxxFill materials using ZT-HE and 0.5mm nozzles. I don't bother with steel or exotic nozzles because the brass ones have better heat conduction and they're so cheap I just toss them after printing abrasive material.

I don't think colorFabb PLA/PHA will print with an all-metal extruder on the Zortrax, unless maybe you go raftless and slow everything down a lot. Are you sure the colorFabb website recommendation isn't for a steel nozzle vs brass?

General Discussion / Re: all metal feed tube
« on: October 25, 2017, 11:24:51 AM »
I haven't tried PA12, but most of the internet info I see recommends 240 - 275º. I'd try the low end of the range first in case swelling in the tube is an issue. The bore of the tube is 2.0mm. I might also try using the PTFE hot end, with the understanding that the tube might need to be changed occasionally.

Sorry about your customs experience - how is nearly 100% duty even possible? That's outrageous. The value and HS code of the goods was correctly indicated on the customs form.

General Discussion / Re: raft removal
« on: October 12, 2017, 04:11:38 PM »
What PLA are you using, and what bed temperature? The ease (or lack of ease) of raft/support removal varies a lot from brand to brand; lately I'm really liking PolyLite from Polymaker, but raft removal is not usually an issue with any of the PLA I use.

When printing on perfboard, you can turn the bed heat off completely, which can help a lot. If printing on glass you need some bed heat, but use the minimum that works.

210º is at the high end of where you want to be with PLA; most of my PLA printing is done at 200 or 205º.

And finally, if you do still end up with a stubborn raft (I had one today with colorFabb PLA/PHA) in many cases one well-placed whack with a good sharp scraper will pop off a raft cleanly when it seemed impossible to remove by hand or by cutters, etc.

You can slice and create g-code with a slicer that supports the feature, then use the g2z converter program to turn the g-code into z-code for the M200.

Yes, the amplifier IC and other components are on the bottom.

Yeah, it stinks that Z-Suite only displays a few settings, while ignoring fan speed and others. Here is a link to deadbeef's "Z-Tool" which can display stuff from a z-code file:

I haven't tested it myself.

General Discussion / Re: TCT in uk?

I think I have some Filamentum ASA but have never gotten around to trying it. 3dgence made some news some months ago and initial response was very positive, but subsequently the people I was talking to cooled off on it considerably. Felix has been around for a relatively long time and I remember reading some positive reviews.

Here's the nGen Lux: https://learn.colorfabb.com/ngen_lux/

I'm not a big fan of nGen and it warped a lot when I tested it a couple of years ago, but the Lux surface is fabulous looking.

Glad it was good! Did you see colorFabb "Lux" nGen? It looks amazing in photos.
